Asia EV Market 2026: China Leads, Southeast Asia Accelerates

China crossed 50% NEV penetration in Q1 2026 — and Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam are following the playbook one model at a time.

The Asia-Pacific EV market crossed a quiet inflection point in early 2026: China's new-energy vehicle (NEV) share of total passenger car sales now sits above 50%, two years ahead of the official policy target. BYD alone shipped more plug-in vehicles last quarter than Tesla, Hyundai, and Volkswagen combined.

But the more interesting story is Southeast Asia.

Three markets on three different trajectories

Indonesia is the most policy-driven. The 11% VAT discount on locally-assembled BEVs, combined with the government's nickel-to-battery industrial strategy, has pushed Wuling, BYD, and Hyundai into local production within 24 months. Q1 2026 BEV sales were up 142% year-over-year — but from a tiny base. EVs are still under 5% of total new-car sales.

Thailand is further along, with EV share approaching 12% of new registrations. Chinese brands dominate: BYD, MG, and GWM together command 60% of the EV market. The B-segment Atto and Dolphin lines are the volume drivers.

Vietnam is the wildcard, with VinFast capturing meaningful share at home and now exporting globally. Whether the brand can defend its position against the China-flood is the question of the year.

What this means for the global picture

Three years ago, the EV conversation was about Tesla and the Europeans. Today it's about Chinese supply chains reaching Southeast Asian assembly plants and exporting back into a global market that's still catching up on charging infrastructure.
